Professional

Mariana's professional journey began well before she earned her bachelor's degree in Information and Communication Technologies from La Universidad Tecnológica de Tehuacán in Puebla. Before graduation, she embarked on a programming course that ignited her passion for web app development.

Her fervor for technology and learning led her to Mayan Technologies. Since last November, Mariana has been an invaluable part of the Custom Solutions team. In this role, she applies her skills to developing tailored solutions for our clients. Let's delve deeper into Mariana's professional journey and achievements.

What do you do at Mayan Technologies?

I hold the position of Jr. Tech Consultant within the Custom Solution (Outsourcing) team and I work as a Web Developer. My main responsibility revolves around maintaining and implementing custom solutions for Web Apps. This includes both front-end and back-end development.

Additionally, I collaborate with my team members in resolving technical challenges, reviewing code, and optimizing software performance to ensure that our solutions meet the client's requirements and expectations. My focus is on contributing to the development of efficient technological solutions that drive the success of the projects.

Can you tell us about a memorable project or achievement during your time at Mayan Technologies that made you feel particularly proud to be a part of the team?

During my time at Mayan Technologies,  I've encountered significant challenges that have shaped my journey. I have worked on many modules within my current project, but one that stands out is “Notes,” which involves patient notes. I had to redevelop the components and services of this module in order to create a better user experience.

This particularly makes me feel proud because, at the time, I had very little experience using React. I had some background knowledge, but it wouldn't be enough. I decided to embrace the challenge by investing time and doing extensive research. I am proud of the way I chose to navigate the situation, which led to a successful delivery. This opportunity to learn was particularly valuable, and the support of my colleagues played a crucial role in this project.

In regards to the "Notes" project, what were the results of the project? How did it impact the clients or end-users?

I feel that we exceeded the client's expectations as we implemented numerous improvements that directly impacted the end users. One notable enhancement was addressing a performance issue, which has now been resolved. When users enter the notes module, it loads more quickly and loads correctly on the first attempt, providing a smooth and optimal user experience.

Can you share how you manage stress or pressure during these challenging projects and challenging times?

During the workday, when I feel stressed, I take a 5-minute break to stand up and stretch, also, spending time with my cat helps me clear my mind and gain clarity to continue. Another way I relieve stress is by exercising and doing Zumba after my workday ends These activities help me manage stress and release tension.

How has your experience been working at Mayan Technologies, and what do you appreciate most about the company's culture?

My experience at Mayan Technologies has been fantastic. I eagerly accepted their offer to join the team and have found the added benefits, like English for Business classes and the wellness program, to be excellent for my professional growth and work/life balance.

The company's culture is what I appreciate most. I was quickly involved in the Santa por un Dia campaign where we donated holiday gifts to needy children. We also support causes like donating to hospitals, raising organ donation awareness, and sponsoring charity events. These were new to me, but I love being part of them. I'm also thrilled with my team. Early on, I began working with David and Alan, who were also new to the project. We've created a supportive atmosphere where we help each other when facing challenges or questions in our tasks.

What are some of the most challenging projects you've been involved in?

A few years back, I was involved in a challenging project called "Stellar Challenge", which was developed using the Flutter framework. It required the development of a mobile application for both Android and IOS platforms. The challenge was the programming language used in this platform since it was unfamiliar to me at the time. I have worked with Angular and React and generally use TypeScript or JavaScript. However, in Flutter, the programming language is Dart.

Additionally, the project architecture was very complex. The project was entirely new. It had to be built from scratch. For example, for the PUK project, we have an existing foundation, and there is a predefined structure and architecture to follow, which makes things easier when implementing new features. But the Flutter project was particularly challenging due to its newness, unique programming language, complex architecture, and the requirement to build from the ground up.

Can you share a brief overview of your experience and the industries you have worked in?

I've always been a part of the tech industry. My initial project was in the municipality of Tehuacán, where I collaborated with a team to develop a web application for citizens to report issues in the city. This was during my internship, and I discovered my interest in mobile app development. This led me to take a programming course, as I had a strong desire to dive into development, but something held me back, perhaps fear of failure. It was during this time that I began searching for a job and found a development company where I spent a year and a half contributing to three web software development projects using Angular.

From there, I joined the PUK project with Mayan Technologies and haven't looked back. All my experience throughout my professional journey, starting from my earlier experiences to my current role, has been in the same industry, and I am excited to see what comes next.

How do you stay updated with the latest trends and technologies in the software development field?

When it comes to staying updated with the latest trends and technologies in web software development, I dive into the documentation of JavaScript, React.js, and Node.js. I research and explore whenever I have doubts, ensuring that I remain up-to-date. I also follow official pages and developer communities on my social media.

I often refer to documentation and watch videos related to what I need or what's been updated. This approach is especially valuable since some features of libraries and frameworks can become obsolete or incompatible with other versions. By staying updated, I can stay informed and aligned with the evolving landscape of software development.

Being a tech consultant can certainly be challenging. How do you handle the pressures, and do you have any mentors or strategies to build your confidence?

Absolutely, it can be overwhelming at times, and I do have support. My mentor, Juan Carlos, is an invaluable resource who reviews my project work and provides guidance. If he's unavailable, I consult with David, who offers advice on how I can improve. As for strategies, I've found ChatGPT to be very helpful. I ask it for solutions, and it provides me with documentation and sometimes even code samples. I thoroughly analyze the code to see if it's applicable or if it needs improvement. In terms of confidence-building, it's a continuous process for me. My experiences and collaborations with coworkers have been instrumental in that regard. Additionally, I listen to motivational podcasts to boost my self-confidence.

Personal

With Mariana's professional journey having illuminated the path to her remarkable achievements, our focus now pivots towards delving into the intricacies of her personal life. Mariana's individuality is a tapestry woven with threads of passion, a profound connection with nature, and the heartwarming embrace of cherished relationships. Embarking on this journey, let's peel back the layers to discover the enchanting facets of Mariana Romualdo's story.

Could you tell us a little about your family history and your own personal story?

Currently, I live in the municipality of Puebla called Zinacatepec. I am the middle child in a family of three girls, and I live with my sisters and mother. I have lived in this region my entire life, and it holds a unique place in my heart because of its familiarity. My family has played a crucial role in my personal development, and I have always had their unwavering support and presence in my life.

If you could choose to live in another place that wasn’t Puebla, where would you like to live?

I have a deep appreciation for nature and landscapes. Recently, I had the opportunity to visit a charming town in Veracruz called Orizaba. What captivated me the most was the natural beauty of the area, with its abundant greenery and refreshing climate. Unlike the intense heat of Puebla, Orizaba offers more comfortable weather that I found very appealing.

One of the aspects that stood out to me was that Orizaba not only boasts nature's beauty but also offers modern conveniences. The presence of essential services, reliable internet connectivity, and a reliable power supply added to its allure. This combination of natural splendor and functional infrastructure makes Orizaba an attractive choice for a potential new place to call home. If I were to choose a place to live other than Puebla, Orizaba would be high on my list.

How do you like to spend your free time?

In my free time, I enjoy staying active. Before the pandemic, I had begun my fitness journey by joining a gym, intending to maintain a healthy exercise routine. However, when the pandemic changed our routines, I adapted by shifting my workouts to home-based exercises,  and then I stopped exercising until this year I started doing Zumba.

Beyond that, my love for nature acts as a stress reliever. Another pastime I enjoy during my free time is hiking. There is a hill about 15 minutes away. I often go there with my friends or family.

What are your personal aspirations, and what are your goals for the near future?

I have several personal goals lined up for the near future.  Two of my primary objectives are to become a senior full-stack programmer and to improve my English proficiency. In fact, this was one of the key reasons I joined Mayan Technologies, as they offer excellent English classes. I believe enhancing my language skills will contribute significantly to my professional development.

Another vital goal is to build up my self-esteem and self-confidence. I've noticed that I often hesitate when making decisions in my professional life, and I frequently look for validation to confirm that I'm on the right path. On a more personal note, I am focused on learning how to manage my temper and emotions better. I want to be able to navigate challenging situations without reacting impulsively and saying things I might later regret in the heat of the moment.

What was your field of study, and could you explain the reasons behind your choice?

I earned a degree in Information and Communication Technologies at La Universidad Tecnológica de Tehuacán. My journey to this field was not immediate; I took a year to explore various options and discern what I genuinely wanted to study. During that gap year, I worked at a convenience store, beginning as a cashier and eventually moving up to an administrative position. It was here that I began to notice the importance of technology in daily operations. I saw how internet connectivity issues affected essential tasks such as processing payments and completing transactions. This sparked my curiosity and ultimately led me to pursue a career in technology.

My degree program comprised two primary components: network infrastructure and programming. At first, I was mainly interested in network infrastructure, but as I immersed myself in the coursework, I found myself increasingly drawn to programming. This newfound passion surprised me, but I soon came to love the intricacies of coding and the joy of problem-solving.

At times, I had my doubts, but my experience in both network infrastructure and programming provided me with a comprehensive and fulfilling education. In retrospect, I can wholeheartedly say that my decision to pursue this career path has been a rewarding one.

Do you have any pets? We recall you mentioning a fondness for cats in previous company activities.

At first, I didn’t like cats, and I even felt a bit fearful of them due to various myths and stories. However, my perspective changed when I was gifted a cat. Now I love them! I am a proud owner of two cats, Nina, who is particularly close to me, and Camilo. In addition to my feline companions, I also have a dog named Taiko.

You mentioned you are a big fan of Studio Ghibli movies. What is that type of movie?

Studio Ghibli is a prestigious Japanese animation studio that produces films in the Anime genre. My fascination with this genre began in high school, and this led me to explore not only Studio Ghibli's movies but also Korean and Japanese television dramas. This genre and its series captivated me, and one particular series that stood out to me was "Death Note,” which I thoroughly enjoyed.

Has any of these movies made a significant impact on your life?

Yes, the movie Spirited Away in Spanish, "El Viaje de Chihiro," has left a significant impact on me. This film resonates deeply because of the journey the protagonist, Chihiro, embarks on. I love her courage to venture alone and her unwavering determination to save her parents, who are transformed into pigs. Her bravery and spontaneity are qualities I greatly admire and aspire to have.
